What does the spending index measure?

The spending index shows health care spending per-person with employer-sponsored insurance in a given area compared to the national average. A positive percentage means per-person spending is higher than the national average. A negative percentage means per-person spending is lower than the national average. It reflects spending on all medical services, including Inpatient, Outpatient, and Professional (clinical) services. For a complete explanation of our Health Cost Landscape methodology, see our methodology document.

What is the Health Cost Landscape?

The Health Cost Landscape provides local data on health care spending, as well as the factors that contribute to spending, including the use, prices, and mix of services that people in an area receive. It also provides contextual information about health care markets, such as the relative cost burden of health care spending and hospital market concentration. This tool is intended to facilitate apples-to-apples comparisons of health care markets across different geographic areas. The Health Cost Landscape website is part of HCCI’s broader effort to increase transparency into the health care system and equip stakeholders with relevant information to improve health care.
